One of the most common reasons a gas pool heater stops working is a failed Hot Surface Ignitor (HSI) — a small but essential component that lights the gas burner. When it fails, your heater can’t ignite properly, leaving your pool water cold even though the unit seems to be running.

What does the Hot Surface Ignitor do?
It’s the part that heats up and ignites the gas to warm your pool water. Over time, it can wear out or crack due to constant exposure to heat and moisture — especially in Florida’s humid climate.

Signs your ignitor might have failed:

  • Heater clicks but doesn’t fire up
  • “Service” or “Ignition Fault” light appears
  • The heater starts but quickly shuts off
