My Pool Repairs

For this week’s Water Lovers Thursday, we’re spotlighting a true prehistoric predator—the alligator gar. With its gator-like snout, armored body, and roots tracing back over 100 million years, this fish looks like it swam straight out of the dinosaur age.
Native to the southeastern U.S., including parts of Florida, the alligator gar is one of the largest freshwater fish in North America—growing up to 8 feet long and weighing over 300 pounds! They’re ambush predators, feeding on fish, crustaceans, and even waterfowl when the opportunity strikes.
Cool Facts:
- They can breathe air and water, thanks to a modified swim bladder that acts like a lung
- Their scales are so tough they were once used by Native Americans as arrowheads
- Despite their intimidating look, they’re not dangerous to people
Thinking about fishing for one?
In Florida, you need a special permit to harvest or possess an alligator gar.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) requires anglers to apply in advance for a no-cost Special Activity License (SAL). This rule helps protect the species, which is relatively rare in Florida compared to other Gulf states.
Catch and release is encouraged
No harvest without permit
Always fish responsibly—these ancient giants are a vital part of Florida’s aquatic ecosystems.
We haven’t seen one while working on a pool yet… but if a dinosaur fish ever shows up near the skimmer, you’ll be the first to know!
