It’s Water Lovers Thursday, and we’re giving a shoutout to one of Florida’s most iconic aquatic stars: the largemouth bass!But wait—did you know there’s a special subspecies known as the Florida bass? Let’s break it down.

The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) is a freshwater favorite found across North America—but here in Florida, we have our very own heavyweight version: the Florida bass (Micropterus floridanus). These two look very similar, but the Florida bass is a genetically distinct subspecies—and it grows bigger and fights harder than its northern cousin!

Florida Bass Facts:

  • Native to the Florida peninsula
  • Known for rapid growth and record-breaking size
  • Florida holds multiple world records, with some bass tipping the scales at over 17 pounds
  • Often stocked in lakes across the southern U.S. to boost sportfishing

Both largemouth and Florida bass are ambush predators, hiding under vegetation and striking at fish, frogs, and even insects. Whether you’re fishing in our lakes, rivers or your neighborhood pond, you might be casting for a true Florida legend.
