My Pool Repairs

Let’s talk about one of the cutest, most playful animals to ever cannonball into a stream: the North American River Otter!
These sleek, semi-aquatic mammals are built for life in the water. With webbed feet, thick water-repellent fur, and streamlined bodies, otters are expert swimmers—reaching speeds up to 7 mph underwater and holding their breath for up to 8 minutes.
But it’s not just survival—otters really know how to have fun. They’re famous for their playful behavior, like sliding down muddy hills, playing tag with each other, or juggling rocks just because they can. Researchers believe play helps strengthen social bonds and keeps their minds sharp.
River otters also play an important role in aquatic ecosystems by helping control populations of fish, amphibians, and invertebrates—keeping everything in balance.
Did you know? Otters even have a special third eyelid, called a nictitating membrane, that acts like built-in goggles when they’re underwater. Talk about swimming in style!
Stay tuned for next week’s featured water-loving animal. Same splash time, same splash channel!
